Fishing Barren River Lake

Barren River is a productive, fertile fishery:

White bass – the lake is famous for its spring white-bass run, when schools push up the river arms and the fishing turns fast and furious.
Largemouth bass and crappie – strong populations on the points, flats and brush.
Hybrid striped bass add trophy power, chasing baitfish in open water.
Catfish and bluegill round out the catch.

A Kentucky fishing license is required. The spring runs and the open-water hybrid fishing are the highlights; a fishing report helps you time the white-bass push.

State resort park, marina and camping

Barren River Lake State Resort Park is the hub, with the Louie B. Nunn Lodge, cottages, a campground, an 18-hole golf course, a marina, a beach and a network of trails. The Corps of Engineers runs additional campgrounds and ramps around the lake. The open water is great for pontooning, skiing and sailing, and the quiet coves suit anglers and paddlers. It’s a complete, all-in-one lake resort destination, popular with families from Bowling Green, Nashville and Louisville.

Getting there and what’s nearby

Barren River Lake is about 40 minutes east of Bowling Green and 1.5 hours north of Nashville, off the Cumberland Parkway near Glasgow. Mammoth Cave National Park and Nolin Lake are within an hour, making for a strong cave-and-lakes weekend.
