Kentucky’s largest natural lake
Almost all of Kentucky’s big lakes are man-made reservoirs, which makes Swan Lake special: at about 300 acres, it’s the largest natural lake in the state. It’s an old oxbow – a cut-off river bend – in the rich Mississippi/Ohio floodplain, one of a twelve-lake group known as the Cummins Tract lakes within the Boatwright WMA. Shallow, weedy and fertile, it’s as much a wildlife haven as a fishing lake.
Fishing Swan Lake
Swan Lake offers classic bottomland-oxbow fishing for crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. A Kentucky fishing license is required. Anglers work the timber, stumps and weed edges from small boats and the bank – spring crappie and bass fishing can be excellent. Because the lake is shallow and tied to the floodplain, conditions vary with river levels and the season.
Waterfowl, wildlife and access
The Boatwright WMA and the wider Ballard County bottomlands are one of Kentucky’s premier waterfowl areas, drawing huge numbers of ducks and geese – and eagles, herons and other birds. Note that access to these lakes is often seasonally restricted during waterfowl season (roughly fall through winter) to protect resting birds, so check current WMA regulations before you go. There’s no developed swim beach; it’s a fishing, hunting and wildlife-watching lake.

As a floodplain oxbow, Swan Lake’s level and clarity follow the rivers and rainfall. It’s in Ballard County, far western Kentucky, near La Center and Wickliffe at the Ohio-Mississippi confluence. The Ballard WMA, Paducah and the river towns are nearby.
